Olaf Merk leads the work on ports and shipping at the International Transport Forum (ITF) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), international organisation in Paris. As such, he directs policy-relevant studies on maritime transport and the ports sector. Olaf Merk is the author of more than fifty OECD publications including “The Impact of Mega-Ships” and “The Competitiveness of Global Port-Cities”. These studies include reports on major ports, such as Shanghai, Hong Kong, Hamburg and Rotterdam. He is a regular contributor to Wall Street Journal Logistics Report, Port Technology International and other industry periodicals and academic journals. Olaf Merk is Associate Professor at the Institute for Political Studies (Sciences Po Paris), and guest lecturer at various other universities. Olaf Merk is a regular speaker at maritime and port conferences, such as TOC, TPM and PFI. Within the OECD, Olaf Merk also worked on infrastructure finance, public-private partnerships and governance. Prior to the OECD, he worked for the Netherlands Ministry of Finance, including as head of unit for sub-national finances.
